=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Finnic *näic'üt. Cognates include Karelian neičyt (girl, maiden), Veps neitšud, Votic neitsüd (“daughter-in-law, fiancée”), Estonian neitsi and Livonian neitst. Derived as neits- + -yt, probably from the same root as neito.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈnei̯tsyt/, [ˈne̞i̯ts̠yt̪]
Rhymes: -eitsyt
Syllabification(key): neit‧syt
Hyphenation(key): neit‧syt
=== Noun ===
neitsyt
virgin (person, especially a female one, who has never had sexual intercourse)
==== Declension ====
In spoken language, the genitive singular can be neitsyeen and the illative singular neitsyeeseen – these forms are proscribed. This confusion is due to the similarity of the nouns ending in -ue / -ye, like joukkue (“team”) (illative singular joukkueeseen), yhtye (“band, musical group”) (illative singular yhtyeeseen).
==== Synonyms ====
impi
