== French == === Etymology === Inherited from Middle French neiger, from Old French negier, from Vulgar Latin *nivicāre, a verb based on Latin nivem (“snow”, noun). Compare Italian nevicare. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /nɛ.ʒe/ ~ /ne.ʒe/ === Verb === neiger (impersonal) (impersonal) to snow Il neigeait. ― It was snowing. ==== Conjugation ==== This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written neige- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as bouger and manger. This verb is impersonal and is conjugated only in the third-person singular. ==== Derived terms ==== === References === “neiger”, in Trésor de la langue française informatisé [Digitized Treasury of the French Language], 2012 === Anagrams === ingère, ingéré, Régine
