From Proto-Celtic *natrixs (compare Breton naer, Irish nathair), from Proto-Indo-European *nh₁trih₂ (compare English adder, Latin natrīx (“water snake”)), from *sneh₁- (“to spin, twist”) (compare nyddu). Related to noden (“thread”), nodwydd (“needle”).
