From earlier nārō, for Proto-Italic *gnārāō (“to make known, tell”), denominal from gnārus; or less likely for Proto-Italic *gnārurāō. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃- (“to know”). The /V:C/~/VCC/ vacillation is similar to, but probably a different phenomenon from, the so-called 'Littera Rule', as in Iūpiter > Iuppiter.
