From Proto-Polynesian *laŋo (“houseflies, bees, wasps”) with metathesis, from Proto-Central Pacific *laŋo, from Proto-Oceanic *laŋo, from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *laŋaw, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *laŋaw, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *laŋaw, from Proto-Austronesian *laŋaw. Cognates include Māori ngaro, rango, Tongan lango and Samoan lago.
Sense of “bee” is due to semantic extension; compare also the connection between Māori ngaro and ngaro huruhuru for similar semantic overlap.
