Inherited from Proto-Slavic *naležati with a semantic shift of to lie on top of > to be a part of, and other semantic shifts stemming from that. First attested in the first half of the 16th century. By surface analysis, na- + leżeć. Compare Kashubian nôleżec and Silesian nŏleżeć. Further compare Czech náležet and Ukrainian нале́жати (naléžaty).
