Cognates with Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects nác, Muong đác, Nguôn đác, Khmer ទឹក (tik), Bahnar đak, Eastern Mnong dak, Central Nicobarese râk/dâk, Santali ᱫᱟᱜ (dak’), Sanskrit दक (daka). The sense of "country" is attested already in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經), where the term was spelled as 渃.
