Inherited from Old English myrġe, myriġe, from Proto-West Germanic *murgī, from Proto-Germanic *murguz, from Proto-Indo-European *mréǵʰus; thus a doublet of bref.
The Southern and West Midland comparative murgere is from Old English *myrgra, with fortition of /ɣ/ between preceding and following /r/; the /ɡ/ of this form was then extended to murgest and the verb murgen.
