From muna + -ta. Adopted into the literary language in the 1930s; in Old Literary Finnish, the word meant “to harvest eggs; to break/destroy bird eggs”, and the sense “to screw up” is likely a reference to the latter sense, but it has been considered colloquial (or even vulgar) due to its later association with muna (“penis, testicle”).
