Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مشمع (muşammaʿ, muşanba, “waxed, wax-cloth, tarpaulin, also oil-cloth, oiled silk”), from Arabic مُشَمَّع (mušammaʕ), passive participle of شَمَّعَ (šammaʕa, “to wax, to rub or smear with wax”).
