Attested from the ninth century. From misceō, possibly by analogy with maculō, or from a deformation of Late Latin miscuere, miscuare, formed from Latin miscuī, first person singular perfect of misceō. Compare also Old High German miskilōn, miscilōn, miskelōn (“to mix, mix together”).
