== English == === Etymology === Borrowed from French magenta, from Italian Magenta, in commemoration of the Franco-Italian victory at the Battle of Magenta in 1859. An aniline dye in this colour had been invented the same year by French chemist François-Emmanuel Verguin and was named in honour of the battle. The town's name derives from Latin Castra Maxentia (“the camp named Maxentia”), referring to the emperor Maxentius. Compare Castra Regina for a similar appositional use of a proper noun with castra. === Pronunciation === (Received Pronunciation, General American) IPA(key): /məˈd͡ʒɛntə/ Hyphenation: ma‧gen‧ta === Noun === magenta (countable and uncountable, plural magentas) A color which is close to the equal mixture of red and blue which is an additive secondary color but a subtractive primary color evoked by the combination of red and light blue. ==== Synonyms ==== fuchsia fuchsine ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Translations ==== === Adjective === magenta (comparative more magenta, superlative most magenta) Having the color of fuchsia, fuchsine, light purple. ==== Translations ==== === See also === === References === === Anagrams === magnate, name tag, gateman, amagent, nametag == Catalan == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): (Northern) [məˈʒe̞n.tə] IPA(key): (Balearic, Central) [məˈʒen.tə] IPA(key): (Valencia) [maˈd͡ʒen.ta] IPA(key): (Northwestern) [maˈʒen.ta] === Noun === magenta f (uncountable) magenta (pinkish purple colour) === See also === == Danish == === Etymology === From Italian Magenta. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): [maˈɡɛnta] === Noun === magenta c (singular definite magentaen, not used in plural form) magenta (pinkish purple colour) === Declension === === See also === purpur === Adjective === magenta (indeclinable) magenta (being of the magenta colour) === See also === === References === “magenta” in Den Danske Ordbog == Dutch == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /maːˈɣɛntaː/ IPA(key): /maːˈdʒɛntaː/ Hyphenation: ma‧gen‧ta === Noun === magenta n (plural magenta's, no diminutive) magenta (pinkish purple colour) === Adjective === magenta (invariable, comparative meer magenta, superlative meest magenta) magenta (being of the magenta colour) ==== Declension ==== === See also === == Esperanto == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /maˈɡenta/ Rhymes: -enta Syllabification: ma‧gen‧ta === Adjective === magenta (accusative singular magentan, plural magentaj, accusative plural magentajn) magenta (being of the magenta colour) == Finnish == === Etymology === From English magenta. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈmɑɡentɑ/, [ˈmɑ̝ɡe̞n̪t̪ɑ̝] Rhymes: -ɑɡentɑ Syllabification(key): ma‧gen‧ta Hyphenation(key): ma‧gen‧ta === Noun === magenta magenta (pinkish purple colour) ==== Declension ==== === Adjective === magenta magenta (being of the magenta colour) ==== See also ==== === Further reading === “magenta”, in Kielitoimiston sanakirja [Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish]‎[2] (in Finnish) (online dictionary, continuously updated), Kotimaisten kielten keskuksen verkkojulkaisuja 35, Helsinki: Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskus (Institute for the Languages of Finland), 2004–, retrieved 3 July 2023 == French == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ma.ʒɑ̃.ta/, /ma.ʒɛ̃.ta/ === Noun === magenta m (uncountable) magenta (pinkish purple colour) === See also === === Further reading === “magenta”, in Trésor de la langue française informatisé [Digitized Treasury of the French Language], 2012 == Galician == === Noun === magenta f (plural magentas, reintegrationist norm) reintegrationist spelling of maxenta === Adjective === magenta m or f (plural magentas, reintegrationist norm) reintegrationist spelling of maxenta === Further reading === “magenta”, in Dicionário Estraviz de galego (in Galician), 2014–2026 == Italian == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /maˈd͡ʒɛn.ta/ Rhymes: -ɛnta Hyphenation: ma‧gèn‧ta === Noun === magenta m (invariable) magenta (pinkish purple colour/color) === Adjective === magenta (invariable) magenta (being of the magenta colour/color) === See also === === Anagrams === magnate, tamagne == Polish == === Etymology === Borrowed from English magenta. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /maˈɡɛn.ta/ Rhymes: -ɛnta Syllabification: ma‧gen‧ta === Noun === magenta f magenta (pinkish purple color) ==== Declension ==== === See also === === Further reading === “magenta”, in Polish dictionaries at PWN‎[3] (in Polish) == Portuguese == === Pronunciation === Rhymes: -ẽtɐ Hyphenation: ma‧gen‧ta === Noun === magenta m (plural magentas) magenta (pinkish purple colour) === Adjective === magenta (invariable) magenta (being of the magenta colour) === See also === === Further reading === “magenta”, in Dicionário Aulete Digital (in Portuguese), Rio de Janeiro: Lexikon Editora Digital, 2008–2026 “magenta”, in Michaelis Dicionário Brasileiro da Língua Portuguesa (in Portuguese), São Paulo: Editora Melhoramentos, 2015–2026, →ISBN “magenta”, in Dicionário Priberam da Língua Portuguesa (in Portuguese), Lisbon: Priberam, 2008–2026 == Romanian == === Etymology === Borrowed from French magenta. === Noun === magenta f (uncountable) magenta ==== Declension ==== This noun needs an inflection-table template.
