In modern usage the two terms are generally considered synonymous in all senses, although some retain the traditional distinction. The modern tendency is in part caused by the fact that most such words in Catalan do triple duty as adjective, common noun, and proper noun, and is in part due to the relatively recent recognition of Macedonian as a language distinct from Bulgarian in the 20th century. === Further reading === Alcover, Antoni Maria; Moll, Francesc de Borja (1963), “macedònic”, in Diccionari català-valencià-balear (in Catalan) “macedònic” in Diccionari normatiu valencià, Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua. “macedònic”, in Gran Diccionari de la Llengua Catalana, Grup Enciclopèdia Catalana, 2026 “macedònic”, in Diccionari de la llengua catalana [Dictionary of the Catalan Language] (in Catalan), second edition, Institute of Catalan Studies [Catalan: Institut d'Estudis Catalans], April 2007
