With dialectal (eastern) -oe- from Middle Dutch luren (“to look sharp”), from Proto-Germanic *lūraną, of uncertain origin, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (“to see”), similar to loens (“cross-eyed”), Latin luscus (“half-blind”). Compare German lauern, English lour and lurk.
