== Old High German == === Alternative forms === lisca === Etymology === Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *hlisku, *hlisiku, *hlusiku (“sedge”), diminutive of Proto-West Germanic *hlus (“reed, sedge”). The ultimate origin could be Borrowed from Romance/Medieval Latin lisca, though the reverse is also possible; this could be from Vulgar Latin *alisca, from Latin arista (“(ear of) corn, grain, awn”). From Proto-Indo-European *leu, related to Lithuanian laure (“dirty person”), referring to the mud it grows in. From a pre-Germanic/pre-Roman substrate language. Compare Middle Low German lēsch, lǖsch, lūs, lēsek, lēsik (“reed, sedge”), Middle Dutch luusch, Old Saxon hlus (“reed, sedge”). === Noun === liska f sedge, reed ==== Descendants ==== Middle High German: *lische German: Liesch === References === === Further reading === Köbler, Gerhard (2014), “liska”, in Althochdeutsches Wörterbuch‎[1] (in German), 6th edition == Polish == === Pronunciation === Rhymes: -iska Syllabification: lis‧ka === Etymology 1 === See liszka. ==== Noun ==== liska f (Łowicz, Różyce) alternative form of liszka === Etymology 2 === See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form. ==== Noun ==== liska m animal genitive/accusative singular of lisek === Further reading === Halina Świderska (1929), “ľisa”, in Dialekt Księstwa Łowickiego (in Polish), Warsaw, →ISBN, page 111 == Serbo-Croatian == === Etymology 1 === Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *listъ, possibly borrowed through Polish liść; compare with the inherited lȋst. ==== Pronunciation ==== IPA(key): /lîska/ ==== Noun ==== lȉska f (Cyrillic spelling ли̏ска) leaf (part of a plant) Synonym: lȋst === Etymology 2 === Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lysъka. ==== Pronunciation ==== IPA(key): /lîska/ ==== Noun ==== lȉska f (Cyrillic spelling ли̏ска) coot (Fulica atra) ===== Declension ===== ==== Further reading ==== “liska”, in Hrvatski jezični portal [Croatian language portal] (in Serbo-Croatian), 2006–2026 “liska”, in Hrvatski jezični portal [Croatian language portal] (in Serbo-Croatian), 2006–2026 === Etymology 3 === See the etymology of the corresponding lemma form. ==== Noun ==== liska (Cyrillic spelling лиска) genitive singular of listak
