From a variant of ljung (“heather”) (compare Old Norse lyngr (“heather”)), from Proto-Norse *ᛚᛁᛜᚹᚨ (*lingwa, “heather”) + -on (a common suffix for fruits and berries). The first element is from Proto-Germanic *lingwą (“heather”).
