Attested since 1872, borrowed from German Ligroin, a trade mark of illuminating liquid hydrocarbon first attested in 1866 as Lygroin and Ligroine. Further origin uncertain, but possibly from Ancient Greek λιγυρός (ligurós, “clear”).
