Via earlier *įžuvis, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *inźūˀs (accusative *inźuwin) + -is. The initial lie(ž)- appeared under the influence of liẽžti (“to lick”), for which compare Old Armenian լեզու (lezu), Latin dingua / lingua, Russian лязы́к (ljazýk).
