=== Etymology ===
By surface analysis, lībum (“cake”) + -ō. De Vaan likewise classifies the term as a denominative to lībum, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂leybʰ-; cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλείφω (aleíphō). Alternatively, the linguist Roman Garnier has suggested that the term emerged from a putative *loiβā́- (v.), itself from *leyH-. Garnier suggests that this pre-form, *loiβā́-, belongs to a hypothetical Indo-European substrate language. According to Garnier, this same substrate word is the source of Ancient Greek λείβω (leíbō). If this theory were accepted, then lībum would be deverbal from lībō.
