From Proto-Finnic *leppä (compare Estonian lepp, Veps lep), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *léiˀpāˀ (“linden tree”) (compare Latvian liepa), if the Finnic and Baltic words are not of common substrate origin. Also related to Erzya лепе (lepe).
(blood): Euphemistic; refers to the fact that the wood of the alder tree turns red when cut.
