Unknown. Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lek- (“to jump, hop, scuttle (> fly)”), and if so cognate with Lithuanian lak (“to fly”), but cognates are few and there is significant semantic distance. An onomatopoeic derivation is also likely.
