Possibly from Latin lūbricus (“slippery, slimy”). Perhaps influenced by lūgubris (“gloomy, mournful”). Doublet of lúbrico. Cognate with Portuguese lôbrego.
An alternative theory derives the term directly from lūgubris, with metathesis; in which case the doublet would be lúgubre.
