kurottua is chiefly used for non-conscious stretching motion that regardless has a goal, e.g. plants reaching towards light, or a telescope antenna unfurling. The more general translation of intransitive to stretch is venyä, while for conscious reaching by e.g. an animal, kurkottaa is used.
