kurk(k)- + -istaa; probably from the same root as kurkottaa, if the semantic development was "to poke (one's head) out" → "to peek". Alternatively, according to Häkkinen, perhaps derived from kurkku (“throat”). Cognate with Karelian kurkistoa.
