From the pronominal stem ku- (also in kuka and kun) + -nnes, a terminative suffix. Compare Ingrian kunis and dialectal sinnes, the adverbial sublative suffix -nne and the adverbial lative suffix -s. Introduced into Standard Finnish from the eastern dialects in the 19th century; not used in Old Literary Finnish.
