From Middle Dutch commer, comber. Multiple etymologies have been proposed:
Often said to be from Old French combre (“hindrance, barrier”), combrer (“to hinder”), from Medieval Latin combrus (“barricade”), usually said to be from either Latin cumulus (“heap”) or Gaulish *komberū << Proto-Celtic *kombereti (“to bring together”) << *kom- + *bereti (“to bear”).
Alternatively, from Proto-West Germanic *kumbr.
