Borrowed from South Slavic, probably from Serbo-Croatian. Cognate with contemporary Serbo-Croatian krȃlj, Slovene králj, Turkish kral, Bulgarian крал (kral), Slovak kráľ, from Proto-Slavic *korľь (“king”), itself from Old High German Karl, the name of the Frankish ruler Charlemagne.
