From Turkish [Term?], composed of Kefe (“Caffa, a city in Crimea”) + kil (“clay”). The material was imported from that region of Crimea.
Alternatively, according to Webster (1913), from Persian کف (kaf, “foam”) + گل (gel, “clay”). Note that Turkish kil is from Persian گل (gel).
