== Kapampangan == === Noun === katáwan Súlat Wáwâ spelling of katauan == Tagalog == === Alternative forms === cataoan, catao-an, catauan, catau-an — obsolete, Spanish-based spelling kataw-an — dialectal, Rizal, Southern Tagalog === Etymology === From earlier kataw-an, from Southern Luzon axis *katawʔan (“body”). Likely a syncopic form of *katawuan, from a root equivalent to Tagalog tao (“human; person”); thus equivalent to tawo +‎ ka- -an. Not directly from Tagalog as Tagalog tawo, older variant of tao, does not end with a glottal stop. This may not be true in the past. Compare Kapampangan katauan and Remontado Agta kataw-an.
