From Proto-Finnic *kangar, *kankarëh, probably from Proto-Norse [script needed] (*gangaʀ), a later loan from the same source as kangas (“a soil type with moraine”); alternatively possibly from Proto-Uralic *këŋka- (“to climb”) (compare kangertaa). Related to Estonian kangur, Karelian kankareh and Livonian kāngar (“ridge”).
