Probably from Proto-Finnic *kalppa, borrowed by metathesis from Proto-Germanic *glapa- (whence Icelandic glapp (“misfortune”) and Old Norse glap (“fornication, impropriety”)). Alternatively, possibly akin to kalpea, with development like “pale” → “ugly” → “bad”. In either case, with + -ten.
