Clipping of kacheloven, a partial calque of German Kachelofen, from Kachel (“tile”) + Ofen (“stove”). The original sense of “tiled stove” has been generalized to any type of stove.
The adjective meaning "drunk" is generally assumed to derive from the noun, although the semantic development is unclear.
