=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Finnic *käcittädäk (“to handle, touch with one's hands; to seize, grasp”). Equivalent to käsi (“hand”) + -ittää, originally "to grasp, seize, catch". The meaning "to understand, to comprehend" is possibly a calque of Swedish begripa (“to grasp, to understand”) (compare Swedish gripa (“to catch hold of, to seize”); also compare English grasp (“to grip; to understand”) and German begreifen (“to understand; to comprehend”)), but may also be due to an autochthonous semantic shift (e.g. related to hunting, initially of catching or seizing something, then subsequentiy of 'seizing' a concept mentally).
