From Middle High German kemmen, kemben, from Old High German kemben, from Proto-Germanic *kambijaną (“to comb”).
=== Pronunciation ===

(transitive) to groom (hair), to comb, brush
(transitive, often reflexive) to groom someone’s hair
==== Usage notes ====
German kämmen is used irrespective of whether a comb or brush is used. The construction sich die Haare bürsten (literally “to brush one’s hair”) is surely possible, but is less common than in English. Bürsten often implies the exertion of some pressure, especially for cleaning.
