From Proto-Finnic *jüvä (compare Veps jüvä), from earlier *jewä, borrowed from an Indo-European language (probably Proto-Balto-Slavic *jéwos), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yéwos (“barley, cereal”). Compare Moksha юв (juv, “chaff, empty glume”).
