=== Etymology ===
Usually considered an irregular, probably sound-symbolic, derivative of juoni. Among the dialectal variants (mostly sporadic) that can be considered are jona, joni, jono and juno. One explanation for the -u- may be influence from juntu.
Originally a (Savonian) dialectal word meaning “line, queue, train”, in which sense it has already been attested in the 19th century. The modern sense “(railroad) train” is first attested in 1861 (see quote). The exact semantic shift “train (group of moving things following each other in a line)” → “(railroad) train” is also seen in English train, German Zug and Swedish tåg, and the Finnish term could well represent a semantic loan from any of them.
