From Proto-Finnic *istudak (“to sit”), from Proto-Finno-Permic *isɜ-. Cognate to Finnish istua, Erzya озамс (ozams). Possibly of Indo-European origin; from Proto-Indo-European *sed-. Compare Ancient Greek ἕζομαι (hézomai).
