Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ابتدائی (ibtidāi, “primitive, fundamental, preparatory”), from Arabic اِبْتِدَائِيّ (ibtidāʔiyy, “initial, primary, elementary”), from اِبْتِدَاء (ibtidāʔ, “beginning”), verbal noun of اِبْتَدَأَ (ibtadaʔa, “to begin, to commence”).
