in vino veritas

التعريفات والمعاني

== English == === Etymology === Borrowed from New Latin in vīnō vēritās (literally “in wine there is truth”), from in (“in”) + vīnō, the ablative singular of vīnum (“wine”) + vēritās (“truth”). While various classical writers in both Greek and Latin make similar statements, the form in vino veritas is from the 16th-century humanist Erasmus, and is first attested in English writing soon afterwards in the same century. === Pronunciation === enPR: ĭn′ vē′nō vĕ′rĭ-täs (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /ˌɪn ˈviː.nəʊ ˈvɛ.ɹɪ.tɑːs/ (General American, Canada) IPA(key): /ˌɪn ˈvi.noʊ ˈvɛ.ɹɪ.tɑs/ (Canada) IPA(key): /ˌɪn ˈvi.noʊ ˈvɛ.ɹɪ.tɒs/ (General Australian) IPA(key): /ˌɪn ˈviː.nəʉ ˈve.ɹɪ.tɐːs/ (New Zealand) IPA(key): /ˌən ˈviː.nɐʉ ˈve.ɹə.tɐːs/ (Scotland) IPA(key): /ˌɪn ˈvi.no ˈvɛ.ɹɪ.tas/ (India) IPA(key): /ˌin ˈviː.noː ˈve.ɾi.ʈaːs/ Hyphenation: in vi‧no ve‧ri‧tas === Proverb === in vino veritas Synonym of in wine, there is truth (one tells the truth under the influence of alcohol) For quotations using this term, see Citations:in vino veritas. ==== Translations ==== === References === == Danish == === Pronunciation === === Proverb === in vino veritas in wine, there is truth (one tells the truth under the influence of alcohol) == Latin == === Pronunciation === (Classical Latin) IPA(key): [ˈɪn ˈwiː.noː ˈweː.rɪ.taːs] (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): [ˈin ˈviː.no ˈvɛː.ri.tas] Hyphenation: in vī‧nō vē‧ri‧tās === Proverb === in vīnō vēritās (New Latin) in wine, there is truth (one tells the truth under the influence of alcohol)
