=== Etymology ===
From Ottoman Turkish امرنمك (imrenmek, “to feel a longing”), cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (amran-, “to love, desire”). Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ăm- (“gentle, quiet; to love, desire”). Also related to Old Turkic [script needed] (amrıl-, “to be quiet”), [script needed] (amul, “gentle, quiet”),
=== Verb ===
imrenmek (third-person singular simple present imrenir)
(intransitive) to long for, feel an appetite for,
(intransitive) to desire (something unobtainable), envy
==== Usage notes ====
This word contrasts with kıskanmak, which can also express jealousy but differently. While imrenmek describes a positive aspiration, wishing to have something someone else does as well; kıskanmak is negative and spiteful to the point where one would rather have noone have the thing wanted than others having it while they don't.
