Thurneysen suggests it may be from imm- (intensive prefix) + ro- (“very”) + gáu (“untruth”), which seems unlikely both formally and semantically.
Stüber proposes another etymology from virtual Proto-Celtic *ambi-ɸro-gusom, i.e. imm- (“around”) + rogu (“choice”), but also struggles to provide a semantic derivation.
