Inherited from Old French immeuble/immoble, borrowed from Latin immōbilis (“that which is immovable”) but adapted to the ending of meuble (“furniture”), inherited from the Latin antonym mōbilis (“that which is movable”). The two terms constituted a recurrent pair in juridical Latin. Doublet of immobile.
