ilm- + -e. Originally coined by Wolmar Schildt in 1837 with the meaning "expression" (as in expression of an idea); the modern sense is first found in Johan Hahnsson et al.: Ruotsalais-suomalainen sanakirja ("Swedish-Finnish Dictionary", 1899). Compare ilmetä, ilmiö.
