ihan
التعريفات والمعاني
== Finnish ==
=== Etymology ===
Probably the instructive singular of obsolete ihta (“opportunity, chance”), from Proto-Finnic *ihta, possibly from Indo-Iranian.
The regular standard form would be ihdan, attested fragmentarily in Old Literary Finnish; variants of this like ihran and ihlan are also found in some dialects. The form ihan, seemingly native to eastern dialects, is however common throughout the Finnish-speaking area.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˈihɑn/, [ˈiɦɑ̝n]
Rhymes: -ihɑn
Syllabification(key): i‧han
Hyphenation(key): ihan
=== Adverb ===
ihan
very, rather, quite
Synonyms: aivan, kovin, todella, tosi, sangen
ihan lähellä ― very close
exactly, precisely, just
Synonyms: aivan, juuri
ihan oikein ― exactly right
ihan kuin minä ― just like me
completely, totally
Synonyms: aivan, täysin, kokonaan
ihan väärin ― completely wrong
ihan mahdotonta ― totally impossible
ihan liian monta ― way too many
(informal) pretty (with positive adjectives) (somewhat, fairly, quite)
ihan hyvä ― pretty good
==== Usage notes ====
The same rule as with aivan applies, in that 'large' adjectives are never used with ihan. However, in practice, this rule is broken often in informal contexts (significantly more so than with aivan), although there is still some tendency to avoid such uses. Furthermore, with some positive adjectives and 'large' adjectives or adverbs, ihan may have a moderative meaning, which aivan can never have.
