From iepure (“rabbit, hare”) + -ar or possibly directly from Latin leporārius, from lepus (“hare”). The literal meaning is thus “something that has to do with rabbits/hares”, i.e. hunts them. Doublet of levrier (“greyhound”). Compare Aromanian iupurar.
