Ultimately a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yaĺ(č)- (“to blaze, flame”).
Cognate with Turkish ışık (“light”), Turkmen yşyk (“light”), Chuvash ҫиҫ (śiś, “to shine”), ҫиҫӗм (śiś̬ĕm, “lightning”).
