==== Usage notes ====
The Finnish word hyvinvointi (literally “doing well”) retains the early 20th century meaning of the word welfare which in both British and American English meant “being in good health or in good financial standing”. The American meaning of the word welfare has morphed and now means “government assistance for the less fortunate”. The Finnish word for “government assistance intended to ensure a person's state of well-being” is sosiaaliturvaetuus (“social benefit”) or sosiaaliavustus (“social assistance”).
