From New Latin hypochondrium, from Ancient Greek ὑποχόνδριον (hupokhóndrion, “the soft part of the body below the cartilage and above the navel”), from ὑπό (hupó, “below”) + χόνδρος (khóndros, “cartilage”). See also hypochondria, hypochondriac, and Wikipedia at hypochondriasis § Etymology.
