In computer character encoding, the original conflated symbol "-" (the hyphen-minus) covered usages aside from hyphenation. There have been additional subsequent symbols created for hyphenation needs. They include the "‐" (hyphen), ‑ (non-breaking hyphen) and the non-visible soft hyphen.
