From Proto-Finnic *huttu, possibly an old past passive participle of a verb borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian šusti (“to stew”)). Cognate to Karelian huttu, Ludian huttu. May also be related to Proto-Permic *šu̇d (“soup”), if it is derived from the same Baltic root.
